Investigate the relationship between coping styles and nurse’s mental health

Abstract

Introduction: Nurse’s physical and mental health and their strategies for coping with stress is directly associated with quality of their performance in patient care. Thus purpose of this research was examining the relationship between coping styles and mental health among nurses.
Method: Research type was descriptive - correlative. Statistical population of research included all nurses in hospital that were 114 nurses and were selected as sample. To gather data, two questionnaires were used: standard questionnaire of mental health with 28 items and standard questionnaire of coping styles with 48 items that their reliability through Cronbach alpha coefficient obtained equal with 0.85 and 0.83.
Result: Means of avoidance and emotional styles were higher than average and problem-oriented style lower than average. Mean of physical, anxiety and social symptoms were higher than average but depression symptoms were lower. Also mean of mental health nurses with 36.20 was higher than cut-off point (23). Among the coping styles, only problem-oriented and emotion-oriented styles have the ability to predict mental health.
Conclusion: According to research results, increasing attention is recommended to nurse’s mental health through strategies education and appropriate styles  for cope with the stress of working environment for nurses
